An earthquake of 6.1 killed in 1000 people in Afghanistan in the morning Wednesday, said officials, added that 1500 people were likely to be injured according to the Bakhtar news agency managed by the government.

The earthquake reached around 44 km (27 miles) from the city of Khost, near the Pakistan border, the US Geological Survey (USGC) said.

Most of the confirmed deaths were in the East Afghan Paktika Province, where 255 people were killed and more than 200 people were injured, said the Ministry of Home Affairs official Salahuddin Ayubi. In Khost Province, 25 people have been killed and 90 were taken to the hospital, he said.

The Bakhtar news agency managed by the government reported the death toll and said the rescue arrived with a helicopter.

The Director General of the News Agency, Abdul Wahid Rayan, wrote on Twitter that 90 houses had been destroyed in Paktika and dozens of people were believed to be trapped under the debris.

The European Seismological Agency, EMSC, said the earthquake vibrations felt more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) by 119 million people throughout Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
