Shahbaz Sharif was appointed as Pakistani’s new prime minister on Monday, following a voice without trust that overthrows Imran Khan.
Sharif was elected by the country’s parliament before. He was the only candidate after only another rival – Khan Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s loyalist – interesting and resigned from his chair.
The new Premier announced a series of populist steps, including a new minimum wage of 25,000 rupees (around € 124 or $ 135). He also promised salary increases for civil servants and development projects for rural areas.
Sharif urged a better relationship with Indian neighbors, while emphasizing that the solution still needs to be found for Kashmir – the territory of disputes for decades between two nuclear powers.
He also promised to handle the economic decline that had seen Rupees at the lowest point of all time, and a large increase in interest rates.
This is the victory of truth, and crime has been defeated,” Sharif said in his speech as Prime Minister, underline the fierce political battle that culminated in his selection.
Sharif, 70, is a favorite to win after a constitutional crisis for a week in the country. He is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who serves three times in that role.
Sharif also called for a better relationship with the US after his election as Prime Minister. Sharif’s statement came when the US State Department denied the accusation of interference in Pakistani’s internal affairs after the accusation by Prime Minister Khan who was overthrown.
The Low Parliamentary Council held Monday afternoon to elect the Prime Minister of Pakistan, following a vote without trust on Sunday, which removed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from power.
Shahbaz Sharif led United’s opposition movement to force the overthrow of Khan, a former cricket star who accused a plot driven by Washington to overthrow him. The US has denied Khan’s accusation.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Khan Party, handed over former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as his candidate to replace Khan as Prime Minister.
Party members resigned en masse when Qureshi was not crowned as a new prime minister. Their resignation will need the need for selection for their seats.Sharif was the only challenger after the strike of more than 100 members of the Parliament from the KHAN Party and was elected with 174 votes.
Shahbaz’s brother Sharif Nawaz was prohibited from holding a public office in 2017 by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He then left the country for medical treatment after serving a 10 -year prison sentence for only 10 years on charges of corruption.
The Pakistani National Accountability Bureau seized almost two dozen property from Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza, accused them of money laundering, in 2019.
In September 2020 he was arrested and detained for six months but was released with a guarantee while waiting for the trial, which was still delayed.
After the voting without trust, Khan remained challenging, writing on Twitter, “The struggle for freedom began again today against foreign conspiracy from regime change.”
