Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday urged political parties to put aside their differences and form the government of all parties that would allow the state to recover from the economic crisis when he convinced the public that talking to the IMF approached conclusions.

Wickremesinghe updated the state of the country’s emergency Monday before the parliamentary vote to elect a new head of state – a poll in which he was the main candidate.

Ranil Wickremesinghe automatically became President of Acting when Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned last week after escaping to Singapore.

Wickremesinghe, a former prime minister six times, is supported for the president’s position by the Rajapaksa Party, who remains the largest in the legislature.

The former president was forced to escape when tens of thousands of protesters stormed his official residence after months of demonstrations throughout the country demanding his resignation over the country’s economic crisis.
