Iran has submitted an application to become a member of a developing country group known as BRICS, said an Iranian official on Monday.
Iran’s membership in BRICS Group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, “will produce additional values for both parties,” said a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Maria Zakharova said separately that Argentina also submitted an application to join the group. Argentine officials cannot be contacted for immediate comments.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, currently in Europe, in the last few days repeats his desire for Argentina to join BRICS.

Russia has long encouraged to establish closer relations with Asia, South America and the Middle East, but has intensified its new efforts to face weather sanctions imposed by Europe, the United States and other countries due to invasion of Ukraine.
On Monday, the United States and other Western countries promised unwavering support for Ukraine after 28 civilians were killed in several Russian attacks, including missile strikes in a crowded shopping center.
Russia has denied targeting civilians in what he called “special military operations” to disarm Ukraine and protect him from fascist. Kyiv and its allies in the West said war was an act of aggression that was not provoked.
